In the 1990s, mainland China was changing rapidly after reform and opening-up, while Hong Kong, under the “One Country, Two Systems” framework, developed its own urban rhythm and cultural identity. Built from found footage, the film places everyday fragments from mainland China and Hong Kong along the same timeline, observing the similarities and differences between the two places within the same era.
This project was made during my exchange semester at Columbia University as the final piece for the Beginning Video course, and was also my first experimental short. Born in 1997, I was curious about the time I was born into but had almost no direct memory of it. By collecting and editing found footage, I tried to piece together a visual impression of that period.
